Egypt got
the job done and qualified to the quarter finals on
top of the group. However, the performance against Zambia
wasn't stellar as the Pharaohs lacked creativity and
sharpness in front of goal and allowed Zambia to score
a late equalizer in the 87th minute. Egypt's only goal
came through Amr Zaki who volleyed the ball home after
a cross from Moawad from the left wing in the 15th minute.
Zaki scored his first goal in the tournament
The Pharaohs succeeded to qualify from their group
and advance to quarter finals to face either Tunisia
or Angola. Egypt almost ended the match in 1-0 win but
a late goal by Katongo meant otherwise and the game
ended in a 1-1 draw.
Egypt was the better side throughout the game and controlled
the rhythm of play. However, the performance was sub
par and many players looked out of shape especially
Ahmed Hassan, Emad Moteb and Shawky.
For the first time, Zidan was benched and Ahmed Hassan
was introduced as a starter. In addition to this, Shady
Mohamed made his ACN debut as he played instead of the
suspended Fathallah.
According to Shehata, Hassan's introduction to midfield
was meant to help the Pharaohs control the midfield
area more but the outcome wasn't good as Hassan lost
possession in more than occasion and his passes weren't
accurate enough.
On the other side, Zambia looked dangerous a few times
but Hani Said and Wael Gomaa were solid at the back
an kept the Zambian danger at bay.
In the 15th minute and from the first organized Egyptian
attack, Zaki scored from a fine volley to give Egypt
the lead. The goal came after a good run from Ahmed
Fathi who advanced with the ball and cut into the middle
from the right flank before passing the ball to Moawad
who crossed it directly to find Zaki who met the ball
with a fine volley with his left to give Egypt the lead.
The Pharaohs had the chance to extend their lead in
more than occasion but lack of concentration in front
of goal didn't allow Egypt to secure the lead.
In the 2nd half, Zaki and Hassan came off and were
replaced by Abo Treka and Zidan while Ibrahim Said came
on at the expense of Moteb.
The changes didn't help Egypt much as the exit of Zaki
meant that Egypt have no target man and the physical
presence was non existent in the final third. On the
other hand, Abo Treka and Zidan's impact was minor.
