Ghanem Doesn't Feature in Last Three Games

Date: 16-10-2005
Wrote: EP's reporter in Poland Piotr Gawin

Although Polish club Legia have continued to show some good performances in the last games, the Egyptian Ahmed Ghanem hasn't featured in the match squad for a while. The 'Manchester United of Poland' are now 3rd in the table.

vs. Polonia Warszawa:

23.09.2005 (8th matchday of Orange Ekstraklasa)
Legia Warszawa - Polonia Warszawa 1-0 (1-0)
1:0 45+3' Wlodarczyk (p)

EP Ratings:

Legia: Lukasz Fabianski 6, Wojciech Szala 6, Mirko Poledica 5, Marcin Roslon 6, Jakub Rzezniczak 6, Lukasz Surma 6, Marcin Burkhardt 6 (75, Aleksandar Vukovic), Tomasz Kielbowicz 4, Bartosz Karwan 4 (60 min, Tomasz Sokolowski) Sebastian Szalachowski 5 (85, Marcin Chmiest) Piotr Wlodarczyk 6

A very difficult match for Legia even though Polonia are having a weak season; they're in the relegation zone, yet they managed to trouble Legia in this derby match.

Legia produced a couple of good chances in the first half, but Szalachowski was stopped twice by Polonia keeper Kieszek. In the final minute of the first half, Serbian defender Mirko Poledica made an attacking move into Polonia's box. Having been gently pushed by one of Polonia players, he fell down and the referee awarded Legia a penalty. A very doubtful decision. Wlodarczyk blasted the ball home with great confidence.

The second half wasn't very entertaining. Legia set themselves to defend. Polonia weren't able to create clear goalscoring chances, while Legia were very inefficient at counter attacking. Fans weren't impressed at all, but it's three points that counts.

Ghanem unfortunately wasn't even among reserve players.

vs. Lech Poznan:

30.09.2005 (9th matchday of Orange Ekstraklasa)
Lech Poznan - Legia Warszawa 1 - 0 (0-0)
1-0 48' Iwan

EP Ratings:

Legia: Lukasz Fabianski 6 Mirko Poledica 5 (46, Marcin Smolinski 4) Wojciech Szala 5 (yc) Marcin Roslon 5 Tomasz Sokolowski 5 Tomasz Kielbowicz 4 Lukasz Surma 5 (yc) Marcin Burkhardt 3 (rc) Sebastian Szalachowski 4 (71, Marcin Klatt 3) Piotr Wlodarczyk 6 Marcin Chmiest 3 (56, Aleksandar Vukovic 4)

A clash of two great rivals was won by Lech this time. 26,000 fans witnessed a tough game, which was characterised by many fouls and few clear goalscoring chances.

Both teams had similar possession in the first half, but Lech were slightly more dangerous. Fabianski, however, didn't have any problems stopping Reiss and Gajtkowski's attempts.

The first minutes of the second half were the turning point of the match. In the 48th minute Topolski's hard and accurate cross reached former Polish international Tomasz Iwan, who gave Fabianski no chance. Three minutes later, Marcin Burkhardt of Legia made a ferocious tackle on Iwan and was sent off.

Despite being down to ten men, Legia managed to take control of the game, but their efforts remained inefficient. Lech won that game, and beat Legia on their home ground for the first time since 1998.

Ahmed Ghanem didn't find his name in match roster.

vs. Wisla Plock:

15.10.2005 (10th matchday of Orange Ekstraklasa)
Legia Warszawa - Wisla Plock 3-0 (1-0)
1-0 38' Djokovic
2-0 60' Klatt
3-0 89' Wlodarczyk

EP Ratings:

Lukasz Fabianski 7, Wojciech Szala 6, Moussa Ouattara 6, Marcin Roslon 6, Tomasz Kielbowicz 4, Lukasz Surma 6, Veselin Djokovic 7, Tomasz Sokolowski 4 (39, Marcin Klatt 6), Aleksandar Vukovic 4 (74, Jakub Rzezniczak 5), Bartosz Karwan 5 (84, Sebastian Szalachowski), Piotr Wlodarczyk 8

The most important fact of this game was not a surprisingly easy Legia victory, but the supporters' protest. They left the stands in order to oppose the club's severe punishments towards those fans who tried to smuggle forbidden pyrotechnic material into the stadium. As a result, a few thousand fans cheered for their team outside the gates.

On the pitch, things looked very good for Legia from the very beginning of the game. Better organisation, better possession and much more dangerous chances created by Legia didn't leave any doubts on who was going to win that one.

In the 36th minute, after a corner kick, Serbian midfielder Veselin Djokovic made a spectacular attempt at Wisla's goal and gave Legia the lead. The second half started with a couple of very good chances for Legia, but Marcin Klatt missed an empty goal - twice! The same player's third attempt, however, proved to be successful at last. The nail in Plock's coffin was hammered by Piotr Wlodarczyk in the 89th minute.

Wisla Plock had two clear chances in the second half, but Fabianski was there to stop their shots.

Ghanem, once again, wasn't even among the substitutes.

Patience is needed, and young Ghanem will definitely see action sooner or later...
