The talented keeper, who will start his third season in Europe, told EP that his preparations are well under way. This season, he feels, is going to have a different shape and should revolutionise his career.

He added that he is in manager van Maarwijk's plans and that the pre-season games will have an effect on the amount of games he gets next season.

"We've started for almost a week now," said Sherif to EP on Sunday evening.

"We're playing against amateur sides and won the first with eight goals and the second with twelve.

"The manager put me and Henk Timmer a half each in the games, because he already doesn't want to differentiate between us. He doesn't want to say who the first goalkeeper is yet.

"I played the second half of the first match, and the first half of the second match. He (the manager) is showing that we are both currently at the same situation."

However, the more important games are still to come at the end of the month and in August. "We have serious preseason games against Chelsea, Liverpool, Porto and Shanghai. The manager said Sherif will play two games and Henk will play two, and whoever impresses will be the first goalkeeper for me."

Sherif continued: "This season is going to be different to the previous seasons. I'm 24 now and can't afford to not be playing.

"Feyenoord didn't sell me but chose to extend my contract for two seasons, something I couldn't have a say in because of my initial contract, which proves that this isn't my last season at the club and that I can offer it a lot."

With regard to the club itself, Sherif feels the transfers are a sign of a much improved season. "The club had a financial crisis last season, but we were surprised to see the board buy Roy Makaay from Bayern Munich, Giovanni van Bronckhorst from Barcelona, Hofland from Germany and several talented players from Holland," he said.

"The team has a new look. Everything indicates that we'll compete for the league this season, especially as we don't have anything to play for but the League and Cup."
