Last Gasp Loss for Egyptian Back-Line

Date: 23-3-2007
Wrote: EP's editor Islam Issa

Both Ibrahim Said and Beshir El Tabei played as centre-backs for Caykur Rizespor in the weekend, in a game which they lost in the final seconds.

The Egyptians paired up in the heart of the defence and performed well against Gaziantepsor, only to lose to a 90th minute goal from the hosts.

The game also saw a full game for Said, showing that he is back to fitness and in the club's plans. He moved up the park throughout the game but performed well in the defence nonetheless.

Rize's manager Riza Calimbay, who has always been fond of El Tabei, and helped him adapt in Turkey, left unexpectedly last week. The new manager chose to play the Egyptians at the back, but reassured that they are an essential part of the team.

But for the club, relegation is very close. They are 15th in an 18-team league, where three sides go down. The loss against Gaziantep has put Rize in a bad situation, particularly as Gaziantep are also one of the candidates for the drop.

The game saw numerous efforts on goal from both sides, particularly Gaziantep. Both Egyptians were able to clear a number of rather dangerousn balls. However, in the first half, Heema was inside his box to meet a cross from the right, but when trying to clear it, the ball went through his legs. Luckily however, the mistake didn't prove fatal.

In the last seconds of the game, a cross was delivered which El Tabei managed to head away. However, it returned to the attack who put it into the danger area. From just inside the box, Erdal Kilicaslan was able to smash the ball home, with Said jumping in the way to pressure him but unfortunately unable to block...
