Amir Azmy shines as PAOK win derby

Date: 2-3-2005
Wrote: EP's reporter in Greece Christos E. Dimitriades

Last Sunday it was as every PAOK fan had dreamed of. The derby between their side and local rivals ARIS F.C. ended with an easy 1-3 win for the black and white club.

The triumph was clear only 11 minutes after the ref's first whistle, with a 0-2 handicap being reailty.

After 27 minutes when Aris lost a player due to a red card (to Sanjurjo) it seemed a piece of cake. At half time, the score was already 0-3 and over 1,000 PAOK supporters that were in the "Kleanthis Vikelidis" stadium burst into celebrations together and with the team's players. The second half was mostly a typical battle.

Amir Azmy this time took the left wing of the defence, a role that let him come forward several times and cause real problems in the Aris defence. Having played 3 games for the Greek club already, everybody in Thessaloniki is now convinced of his value and believe that he can contribute in a new start at his new club.

PAOK stay 5th with 31 points, and it seems that they have kept their UEFA Cup position for next season for sure, but are far away from the Athens clubs Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK. The surprise of this championship, Skoda Xanthi, remain 4th.

Next match is against the greatest rival of the club, Olympiakos from Pireas, and pundits estimate it will be a sell-out in Toumba stadium with nearly 30,000 PAOK fans eager for another bright derby display...
